Remembering Ken Justiss
Some of the jingles used on Mason Vye Worldwide were made by Ken Justiss, and I am very proud to have a small connection to his remarkable body of work.
I first discovered Ken's work as a shortwave listener through WBCQ's Radio New York International. I had no idea then who created those distinctive sounds, or that years later I would have several Sonovox jingles made by Ken for my own radio programs.
Sonovox was an early voice effect that gave speech a distinctive mechanical, almost robotic sound. It was created by placing small speakers against the performer's throat, allowing the vibrations from the speakers to be shaped by the performer's mouth and vocal tract.
Ken worked at TM Productions in Dallas during the golden age of radio jingles, and his Sonovox work was heard across North America and Europe, including on Radio Northsea International and Radio Caroline.
Ken passed away on March 31, 2025. I am grateful that his work continues to be heard.
